Bernie Sanders’s Campaign Is Different

A new video from the Bernie Sanders campaign is proof: Sanders has used his bully pulpit to amplify workers’ struggles around the country, in a way no national politician in the United States has done before now.

“If I miss a paycheck, I’m screwed. I would literally become homeless.”

With this statement in the latest Bernie Sanders campaign video — premiering at Jacobin — labor activist Kelly Osborne of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, speaks for millions of working-class people. Osborne, a forty-four-year-old cancer survivor who is raising her five-year-old grandson, works at McDonald’s for $8.25 an hour, which she describes as “just not a living wage.”

Trump’s Racism Is Not Blundering — It Is Tactically Deliberate

Donald Trump is a giant flapping racist and doesn’t give a single damn if that bothers you. Given this reality, it is important to note that when Trump dispensed with all pretense and held a one-man Sunday morning Klan rally on Twitter, it was not a blunder on his part.

When he dug his heels in on Monday morning and said the women of color he insulted were the ones who owed an apology, it was not an oops.

When asked pointedly by reporters on Monday if he was bothered that white nationalists have been celebrating his outburst, Trump replied, “It doesn’t concern me because many people agree with me. And all I’m saying, they want to leave, they can leave.” It was not a mis-statement.

Presque unanimement, tant les médias grecques et internationaux que les leaders des principaux partis grecs ont commenté les résultats des élections du 7 juillet en célébrant “le retour à la normalité” du pays dont la crise a défrayé la chronique européenne pendant la dernière décennie. Retour donc à la normalité car l’addition des scores de Nouvelle Démocratie (39.9%) et de Syriza (31,4%) donne un écrasant 71,3% en faveur du bipartisme qui semble revenir en force après un intermède chaotique qui a vu des masses de citoyens abandonner les partis de leur vieux bipartisme traditionnel et se déplacer pratiquement d’une extrémité à l’autre du paysage politique en des temps record! Et aussi, quelle meilleure preuve de la réalité de ce retour à la normalité que l’ absence des députés de la très néonazie Aube Dorée des bancs du nouveau Parlement hellénique, ce qui annoncerait (?) la fin de ce pur produit d’une période agitée, mais désormais révolue...

(“They can get really excited to meet her.”) Greta Thunberg is in her home in Sweden, her father testing the technology for the video link while the teenager waits in the background. The activists have never met nor spoken but, as two of the most visible climate campaigners in the world, they are keenly aware of each other.

Mais depuis un an, Olivier Besancenot tente, tant bien que mal, de faire se parler les gauches politiques et sociales. Sa volonté unitaire s’était matérialisée, au printemps 2018, pendant le mouvement des cheminots contre la privatisation de la SNCF, lors duquel l’organisation anticapitaliste avait organisé plusieurs réunions unitaires à La Brèche, la librairie du NPA (nous vous en parlions ici).

L’idée reçue qui veut que les Américains soient imperméables au socialisme a manifestement la vie dure dans la gauche européenne. En effet, trois ans après que le socialiste indépendant Bernie Sanders eut fait un carton, à tel point que la direction du Parti démocrate fut obligée de recourir aux pires tricheries pour le priver de sa victoire sur Hillary Clinton et de la nomination du parti à la présidentielle de 2016, force est de constater que la gauche européenne – de toutes sensibilités – continue de rester impassible devant la percée toujours plus spectaculaire des idées socialistes aux États-Unis. Alors, aucune surprise si elle montre peu d’intérêt pour les conséquences et les manifestations politiques et sociales de cette percée et n’arrive pas à profiter de leur impact en Europe et de par le monde.

In Algeria and Sudan, the army has become an arbiter in the ongoing revolutions. For what reasons?

These are military institutions which everyone knows are the real backbone of the regime in countries like Algeria, Sudan or Egypt. Seeing the extent of popular discontent, they decided to act in a conservative coup, sacrificing the head of the regime to preserve the rest. We saw this with Hosni Mubarak in Egypt, and we are witnessing the same thing with Abdelaziz Bouteflika and Omar al-Bashir. In all three countries, the army is at the heart of the regime. They get rid of a president who has become more an embarrassment than a benefit in order to preserve the regime.

The Martyrdom of Julian Assange

The arrest Thursday of Julian Assange eviscerates all pretense of the rule of law and the rights of a free press. The illegalities, embraced by the Ecuadorian, British and U.S. governments, in the seizure of Assange are ominous. They presage a world where the internal workings, abuses, corruption, lies and crimes, especially war crimes, carried out by corporate states and the global ruling elite will be masked from the public. They presage a world where those with the courage and integrity to expose the misuse of power will be hunted down, tortured, subjected to sham trials and given lifetime prison terms in solitary confinement. They presage an Orwellian dystopia where news is replaced with propaganda, trivia and entertainment. The arrest of Assange, I fear, marks the official beginning of the corporate totalitarianism that will define our lives.

Rwanda: A look back at the 1994 genocide

Starting on 7 April 1994, in less than three months, nearly one million Rwandans – the exact figure has not yet been determined - were exterminated because they were (or supposed to be) Tutsis. Tens of thousands of moderate Hutus were also slaughtered. This was indeed a genocide, that is, the deliberate destruction of an entire community through mass murder in the aim of preventing their biological and social reproduction.

In this context, it is crucial to investigate the role played by international financial institutions. Everything we know leads us to believe that the policies imposed by these institutions, the main financial backers of General Juvénal Habyarimana’s dictatorial regime accelerated the process resulting in the genocide. In general, the negative impact of these policies is not taken into consideration to explain the tragic unfolding of the Rwandan crisis. Only a few authors highlight the responsibilities of the Bretton Woods institutions [1], which have rejected any kind of responsibility.

There is no doubt that Donald Trump’s policies, those of the Lima group [1] and the European powers who seek to impose the usurper Juan Guaidó as President of Venezuela and do not hesitate to interfere in order to succeed, must be opposed. As usual, Washington and its allies are announcing a humanitarian crisis as a pretext for the threat of military intervention in a country that has important quantities of natural resources that they seek to grab. The trick is cheap and must be shown up for what it is. All the more so, that the mainstream media are conniving to prepare public opinion for this possibility. The situation is presented in the starkest of terms: a catastrophic dictatorial regime refuses to allow humanitarian aid to reach its needy population; whereas the self-proclaimed new President wants freedom for his people and calls for international help to release the aid that is blocked at the frontier, to the population.

Contre les actes antisémites, contre leur instrumentalisation, pour le combat contre toutes les formes de racisme

Nous soussignés associations, partis, syndicats, indépendants, sommes toutes et tous activement impliqués dans la lutte contre le racisme sous toutes ses formes. La lutte contre l’antisémitisme fait partie à part entière de notre combat antiraciste. Nous condamnons fermement les actes antisémites, qui surgissent dans un contexte social et politique particuliers.

Malgré l’ampleur du dispositif de répression policière et judiciaire déployé contre les Gilets jaunes par l’État, le mouvement continue de bénéficier d’un fort soutien populaire. Il n’est pas homogène et révèle une effervescence sociale. Face à un gouvernement déterminé à ne pas répondre aux attentes sociales, il reflète la société française et ses contradictions et a largement évolué dans ce qu’il porte depuis le mois de novembre.

Alargar la excepción para impedir la solución

Año nuevo con las viejas excepciones de siempre, la agenda política catalana arrancará en breve, a la sombra prevista de un 22 de enero marcado en rojo en el calendario y bajo los compases del mayor juicio político revivido en Catalunya desde las postrimerías franquistas.

Días de enero y silencio en la sala, se juzgará por rebelión a nueve hombres y tres mujeres: la presidenta encarcelada del Parlament, medio Gobierno catalán entre rejas y los dos portavoces presos de los dos mayores organismos civiles y sociales, Ómnium Cultural y la ANC. Ahí es nada, solo en falsa apariencia demofóbica: en realidad, a quien obligan a sentarse en el banquillo de los acusados es a la mayoría social catalana y al derecho de autodeterminación. Pretenden condenar a unos pocos, sí, pero para sentenciar a unos muchos. Como mínimo, proceso al procès, a la dignidad de dos millones de catalanes y catalanas, aunque la afectación ejemplarizante impactará en toda la sociedad. Manuales represivos que triunfan en corto pero fracasan en largo, el Estado español ya ha asumido que la hipotética victoria sobre el independentismo solo se puede forjar sobre el órdago de la devaluación democrática, la regresión represiva y la degradación judicial, aunque Estrasburgo lo tumbe dentro de unos años. Santiago y cierra España, que ancha es Castilla. Patadón y pa’lante.

The far right: A global phenomenon

In recent years, the reactionary, authoritarian and/or fascist extreme right wing has been in the ascendant all over the world: it already governs half of the world’s countries. Among the best-known examples are: Trump (United States), Modi (India), Orbán (Hungary), Erdoğan (Turkey), Daesh (Islamic State), Salvini (Italy), Duterte (Philippines), and now Bolsonaro (Brazil). But in several other countries we have governments close to this trend, even if they do not have such an explicit definition: Russia (Putin), Israel (Netanyahu), Japan (Shinzō Abe), Austria, Poland, Burma, Colombia and so on. In fact, the distinction between these two groups is completely relative.
