Against the banning of the consultation of 9 November:

THE PEOPLE OF CATALONIA HAVE THE RIGHT TO VOTE AND TO DECIDE THEIR FUTURE

 The Catalan people have proven to the world that they are ready to take the reins of their own destiny.
 Since the 2010 ruling by the Spanish State Constitutional Court cutting down the Catalan Statute of Autonomy – after it had been approved by the Catalan and Spanish parliaments and endorsed by a majority vote of the Catalan people in a referendum in 2006 – there have been street demonstrations and a range of other actions in favour of sovereignty have united most people behind the demand for the power to vote for an independent state. The most recent was the march in Barcelona on September 11, Catalonia's national day, attended by 1.8 million people.

 In contrast to the United Kingdom, where the Westminster government reached an agreement with the Scottish Government to bring about a referendum for national self-determination, the government of Spain, led by Mariano Rajoy, (Peoples' Party), refuses time and again, to recognise that Catalonia is a nation where the people have the right to vote and decide the nation’s future. Thus, there is no dialogue or process of negotiations between the two sides.

Three hundred years ago, at the height of the War of Succession, the new Bourbon Spanish king entered  Barcelona after a year-long siege and ended Catalan sovereignty by force of arms, establishing in Catalonia the ancient laws of Castile, its language and its absolute monarchy. Today, Spain is helping to progressively reduce the linguistic, cultural and fiscal rights that were agreed in 1978, after the death of Franco. This is contributing to rapid increase in poverty in Catalonia, paradoxically one of the wealthiest and most compassionate territories. The situation is already unsustainable and requires an urgent change towards autonomy and more socially just politics.

 Now the Spanish Government, using its absolute majority in Madrid, and with the support of PSOE (the  opposition Socialist Party of Spain), with a biased Constitutional Court that is a political auxiliary of the  government, seeks to block “by any means” a peaceful vote by the Catalan people in a non-binding  consultation, a consultation on 9 November that can, under the constitution, only have the character of a political protest.

 Will the governments, political parties, and democratic forces of Europe, Latin America and the world allow this democratic outrage to continue?

 Esquerres pel Sí-Sí (Left for Yes-Yes) was founded to push for a positive response to the 9 November  consultation, and as a common platform for the different left-of-centre currents that exist in Catalonia -including trade unions, communities, feminists, republicans, supporters of self-determination, supporters of independence, socialists, social democrats, environmentalists. We are calling on the citizens of Europe and the world, governments, political parties, movements, democratic institutions to support the right of the Catalan people to have the right to decide their own future, and to ask the Spanish government to allow the people of Catalonia to vote freely and peacefully on 9 November.

Ante la consulta del 9 de Noviembre

EL PUEBLO DE CATALUNYA TIENE DERECHO A VOTAR Y A DECIDIR SU FUTURO

 El pueblo catalán ha dado muestras al mundo de que está dispuesto a tomar las riendas de su destino.  Desde 2010, cuando le fuera recortado por el Tribunal Constitucional el Estatuto, después de haber sido  aprobado por los parlamentos catalán y español, y votado mayoritariamente en referéndum por el pueblo catalán, las decisiones de la actual mayoría parlamentaria, asumidas por el gobierno catalán, las  manifestaciones en la calle y actos de soberanía de todo tipo han reunido cada vez más gente exigiendo poder votar por un Estado catalán y la independencia. La última de ellas fue el pasado 11 de setiembre, Día nacional, en Barcelona, con asistencia de 1.800.000 personas.

 A diferencia del Reino Unido, donde el gobierno de Westminster acordó con el gobierno escocés la  realización de un referéndum de autodeterminación, el gobierno de España presidido por Mariano Rajoy  (PP) se niega, una y otra vez, a reconocer que Catalunya es una nación, que tiene derecho a votar y que es el pueblo soberano quien decide. En cualquier caso, la negativa abarca cualquier forma de diálogo o proceso de negociación entre las partes.

 Hace 300 años, en plena Guerra de Sucesión, el nuevo rey borbónico español entró en Barcelona después de un asedio total de un año y acabó con la soberanía de Catalunya por la fuerza de las armas, implantando entonces las antiguas leyes de Castilla, su lengua y su monarquía absolutas. Hoy se asiste a una pérdida progresiva de los derechos lingüísticos, culturales y fiscales que fueron pactados en 1978, tras la muerte de Franco. Esto está afectando a un rápido incremento de la pobreza en Catalunya, contradictoriamente siendo uno de los territorios más ricos y más solidarios. Una situación que es ya insostenible y que requiere un cambio urgente hacia políticas soberanas y más sociales.

 Ahora el gobierno español, usando su mayoría absoluta en Madrid y el apoyo del PSOE, con un Tribunal  Constitucional parcial, dependiente de la política del gobierno, pretende impedir “por todos los medios”  la votación pacífica del pueblo catalán en una consulta no vinculante. Consulta que sólo puede tener, por imperativo constitucional, un carácter de manifestación política, el próximo día 9 de Noviembre.

 ¿Pueden los gobiernos, partidos, movimientos democráticos de Europa, de América Latina y del mundo dejar que se consume ese atropello a la democracia?

 Esquerres pel Sí-Sí nace para impulsar la respuesta positiva a la consulta del 9N como espacio común de diferentes izquierdas que existen en Catalunya de carácter sindical, vecinal, feminista, republicano,  soberanista, independentista, socialdemócrata, ecologista. Llamamos a la ciudadanía de Europa y del  mundo, a sus gobiernos, partidos, movimientos, instituciones democráticas, a apoyar el derecho del pueblo catalán a decidir soberanamente y a pedir al gobierno español que deje votar libremente y en paz al pueblo catalán el próximo 9 de Noviembre de 2014.
